Sulzberger called into Cyclones team for world titles

Cycling Australia, Tuesday, 18 September 2012

Cycling Australia selectors have confirmed Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger will join the Cyclones team after the withdrawal of MIchael Rogers from this weekend's elite men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships in the Netherlands.

Rogers, one of Australia's most experienced campaigners, has been forced out due to a bout of tonsillitis prompting a selectors meeting to replace him in the nine man team for Sunday's 267 kilometre race from Maastricht through the Limburg region to the finish line in Valkenburg.

"It's always a blow to lose a rider of the calibre of Michael Rogers from a naional team," said Cycling Australia National Performance Director, Kevin Tabotta. "Michael adds so much value physically and tactically to our worlds teams.

"This season has been one of his best and his experience will be missed on Sunday."

This year would have been the 13th straight year that Rogers would have raced for Australia at the road world championships. He raced as a junior in 1997 and 1998 before graduating into the under 23 ranks for the next two championships. He has been a member of every eiite men's Australian team at road worlds since 2001.

The decision on who would come into the team was based on the race plan for Sunday.

"We needed to bring in someone who we know has the experience and current form to provide the support needed for team plan," said Tabotta. "Wes has world championship and big race experience and we're confident he will provide solid back up for the team leaders in their pursuit of a podium result."

This will be 25-year-old Sulzberger's fourth appearance at a road world championships. He was the silver medallist in the under 23 road race at the world titles in Stuttgart in 2007 and was a member of the team that rode in support of Cadel Evans when he won the elite men's title in Mendrisio in 2009.
